ANGLING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

The Fishery is for obvious reasons (business and community) keen to encourage young people to get out and enjoy the outside environment - and to put something on the table. We have generous discounts for young people (they are free with an adult) and when two people between the ages of 16 and 18 go fishing it is the same price as a single adult. We also endeavour to ensure that young people get fair access to weekend boats. In additon we have the young persons club night, the Cormorants, administered by Alisdair Mair and assistants on Tuesday nights during the summer (fly tying in the winter). All coaches and helpers are suitably qualified and have had the relevent checks and the cost is minimal. The Youth National takes place on the Lake during the last weekend in October. The Lake was host to the Youth International in 2011 and there were 5 Menteith Cormorants in the National Team.

Young Persons Fly Fishing and Coaching. Lake of Menteith – Season 2012

Weekly Sessions
The Lake of Menteith Fisheries Company have a  fly fishing club called the “Cormorants” – based at the Lake of Menteith, Stirling. Since its inception in 2006 the Cormorants  have introduced many young people to joys of fly fishing and the outdoor environment, on one of Scotland’s premier and most beautiful trout fisheries. Over the past five years the club has tutored many young  new enthusiasts to excel in the sport, and enjoy fly fishing as a worthwhile and healthy outdoor hobby or pastime .

For those who develop an interest in the angling competition scene, the Cormorants can provide a more in depth program of confidence building  in indoor and outdoor skill sets, profiled  specially for each individual, to assist them to fish with confidence at the highest Junior level in Scotland (i.e. Junior Fly Fishing Internationals and Junior National Fly Fishing Championships). Alternatively participating individuals may be happy to simply develop their angling skills and environmental knowledge.

Evening classes (fly tying etc) run through the winter period from Nov till April. Fishing starts on the first Tuesday in May, when the nights get longer.

Tuition is given freely in all aspects of fishing and boat handling from our suitably qualified and experienced  ex National Champion and SANA level three coach. All assistant boat persons (aka ghillies) are qualified to Scottish Anglers Leader Award standard and  have  been vetted, and hold disclosure Scotland Certificates.

The fishing permits and boat hire are heavily discounted [maximum of £5 per evening per individual]. All fishing is by boat which takes place weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 till 9.30 pm  from 1st May till end of August. The club currently has 10-12 members but we are looking to extend membership to a maximum of 20 persons. Tackle and equipment is available on loan during initial stages. Life jackets are provided.

Block Lessons
We also plan to hold block coaching days during the Easter and Summer Holidays. The dates are 9-13th April and 23rd -27th July. The cost is £50 per individual for the five days.
Teaching will concentrate on the basics of fly casting and fishing. Health and Safety sessions will identify hazards and reduce risks. Supervised sessions on water  will have the primary objective of catching trout.

Coaching is aimed at people between the ages of 9 and 18. Acceptance for courses will be on a first come, first served basis.
