PRE - SEASON FISHERY PRESS RELEASE Week ending: 15/03/02

Water Temperature at 6ft = 5.5 C Secchi Clarity = 2.4m

The majority of the cormorants got iced out of Menteith at the beginning of the winter due to the nice and early frosty snap in December. Again we didn't quite manage a big match but there was some nice inshore skating to be had. Hopefully the ice cover and our exclusive use of large sized triploids last year, will mean greater numbers of over-wintered rainbows and browns. In the recent warmer spell there was quite a rise they appeared to be good sized rainbows. January and February were decidedly wet and fairly mild which allowed for good growth in the ponds. This years initial stocking weight is up on last year at 2 - 2 lbs, we will also be stocking a fair number of fish in the 4-5lb weight range. All in all there will be a more and bigger start at the Lake. Our plans for the brown trout will depend a bit on price. Our current plan is to stock with 8-10% brownies in the first few months and see how the market goes. In 2001 there was a big supply of very cheap brownies due to a lack of river stocking because of F&M. I hope and doubt this will be repeated.

Last year we replaced all our older boats with a new design of Lomond 15'. The big change this year is our decision to supply engines to all our boats. This change has been welcomed by the vast majority of our customers so it must make sense! Co-incidentally our bookings are up a healthy 10% on last year. The majority of these engines are brand new Yamaha Maltas (the rest were new Maltas last year). These 2.2KW (~3HP) engines are fitted with fine silt and water traps, and have proved themselves to be very reliable. All the transoms have been widened to allow space for customers to fit their own electric motors we haven't ruled out lugging all together.

We have some new competitions: The Glenkinchie Boat League (Wednesdays) and the SANA Open.
