Report for: 1st April - 4th April 2002

Water Temperature at 6ft = 8 C Secchi Clarity 2.1m

East winds continued and gained in strength and chill factor, as the week progressed. The lake has not warmed much due to this and the low night temperatures. The good start on 30/3/02 has not fallen away as quickly as in previous years and catch rate is remaining high. As expected, over-wintered fish are being caught in large numbers and are usually discernable by their slim appearance and the fact that you can hold them up by the tail. Fish weights are varying between 2-2 lbs and boat average catches have been very good at 14-17lbs per boat. .

On Monday 1st April, 21 boats landed 169 fish for 363lbs. An average of 8 fish or 17lbs per boat. Christie and Will (Edinburgh) landed 15 for 28lbs. M.Fleming (Kilbirnie) 15 fish 33lbs, T.Brown 14 for 29lbs, and R.Aitken 14 for 27lbs. Stanley AC (8boats) caught 66 fish for 139lbs.

On Tuesday 2nd April Jim Law (Motherwell) had his 7 fish limit for 16lbs and Mr.Porter of Grangemouth landed 9 for 21lbs.

Wednesday 3rd April: Best boat Dougie Inglis and J.Watson with 14 fish for 27lbs.

On Thursday 4th April: 28 boats landed 180 fish for 408lbs an average of 6.4 fish (15lbs) per boat. Strathclyde Police (13 boats) landed 110 fish for 246lbs. Top rod on the day was Neil Mitchel who landed a 4 pounder on his first cast.

Techniques have varied but few anglers are now trying the floating lines - which were successful on opening day. Most are using intermediate lines with lures or hackled wets. The cats, booby and damsel have all got fish. The eastern shores have produced the best catches and this includes Sandy Bay.
