We have been hosting the Anglian/Airflow Team Challenge this week and with the final on Thursday anglers have been keeping successful tactics close to their chests. The deeper areas of the western shore and Gateside bay have seen the highest boat congregations but as usual fish are also to be found all over and around the Lake. Jim Hunter and Paul Garner caught these predominantly over wintered (or over summered fish), pictured left, on Monday evening. The clarity is remaining good and the pin fry abound (about 1.2cm long). Also in plentiful supply are the damsel flies which need sunny weather to “inflate” their wings when emerging from the nymph stage. The larval stage of the damsel is pictured below right. These 25 long nymphs crawl up stems to hatch out, and are sometimes seen swimming in free water by means of an eye catching side to side tail wagging.
In the AnglianWater Air Flow Team Heats on Monday during the day (rod average 3.2) Change Fly Fishers, Leven fly Casters, Grizzle Cats, Alder FF and Butcher Boys qualified for the Thursday finals with Team Wellbank, Craufurdland, Heron FF and Heather FF failing to make the cut. On Monday night (rod average 2.0) Menteith Ospreys, Hungry Trout, Saltire and Change B qualified with West Lothian, Leslie and Glenrothes and Perth AC missing out.
