Lake of Menteith Report 21st July
Gateside Bay: Temperatures are still falling gradually at the Lake (now 17C at 6ft at Gateside Bay) and clarity is 2.1m. Some of the best fishing of the season so far in the last week, with most of the activity on or near the top. Dries, boobies, buzzers/diawl bachs, lures (damsels/cats), snatchers have all been catching fish notably in Gateside Bay (along the rope), International Bay and the Malling shore. This fine sunset image was sent in by Jim Twaddle who lives in Cumbernauld but fishes a lot on the River Allan. Due to the fact that I have been reading the Cloudspotter’s Guide, I noticed the disappearing jet trail in the top left and that the clouds were kind of lentil or almond shaped (full name altocumulus lenticularis; aka “lennies”). These are formed when air is forced up over mountains. Also the second furthest left of the Menteith hills is having a wee misty night cap.

On the 10th night of the Angling Centre Stirling Menteith Boat League the 32 anglers landed 117 fish for 278lbs with 16 five fish limit bags. First on the night was David Paterson with 5 fish for 13lbs 3ox, 2nd Andy Mackay with 5 for 13lbs 2oz and 3rd J.Twaddle. The heaviest fish was caught by Alec Barnes. With only 9 nights counting the poorer scores or no shows are now being deducted. Andy MacKay is now top of the League with 56 points. In 2nd position is Ian skilling on 83 points and Robbie Mather is 3rd on 84 For results and league placings see the boat league results on the website. Biggest fish and heaviest bag received the prize of a fly line from ACS. With only 3 more nights to go until the Final and BBQ on the glorious 12th - Andy is in a strong position.

The 12th Heat of the Scottish Club Championships Sponsored by the Daily Record, Angling Centre Stirling and Famous Grouse Whisky, the 51 anglers caught 126 fish for 307lbs. First placed were Caley Liners (J.simpson, R.Irvine and M.Hamilton) with 12 fish for 31lbs 2oz, 2nd place were Alba Flyfishers with 12 for 29lbs 3oz and 3rd were Crieff FF with 12 for 25lb 11oz. These teams go through to the semi-final on the 25th September.  There were 13 five fish limits. The top 4 weights were D.Shaw (Carradale), S.Stirton (Perth C.S.), J.Gardiner (Alba), and J.Simpson and R.Irvine (Caley Liners).  Winners, top rod and heaviest fish received bottles of Famous Angler (Grouse) Whisky.
