Preseason Report  17th March 2009

Water temperature at 6ft 7C Clarity on Secchi disc 1.6m

The preseason stocking has now been completed and fingers are crossed that the weather will stay kind for opening day on Saturday 21st March. Opening Day this year combines with Chairman’s Day. It is an invitational day and dinner, where the company thanks competition organisers, club secretaries and regulars. Unfortunately there are not enough boats to go round and if you have been disappointed this year, there is always hope for next year as we will try and rotate the invitations so that no one feels left out! The big news from the closed season is the new record brown and rainbow trout caught and returned on pike tackle (see below).

2008 Summary

The average fish weight for 2008 was 2lbs 6oz, and the 8hr day average 2 man boat catch for the year was a record 5.12 fish for 12lbs 1oz.

As can be seen from the data above 2008 was a record year for fish catches at Menteith – the high rate of catch and release (23%) undoubtedly helped to boost the catch rate. Prices for 2009 have been held at 2008 levels. Barbless hooks are no longer discretionary when fishing catch and release – they must be deployed. March/April appears to be a consistantly good month!

Winter Pike Fishing

21lb rainbowrecord brown

A new rainbow record was made when Stuart McNairn from Edinburgh (left) landed a colossal blue of 21lbs on a 7 inch lure in November. Dick Culpin visiting from England smashed the lake brown trout record - again with pike tackle. This time the 11lbs 8oz brownie fancied a half mackerel ledgered in 26ft of water. The biggest pike of the winter was a 36 pouder caught by Lake pike expert Scott Davidson from Glasgow.
