Lake of Menteith Report 19th May

Gateside Bay:Temperature at 6ft - 14C, Water Clarity 2.1m on the secchi disk.

The Lake was back to business as usual this week with some big fishing events and some fine catches on the buzzer and the dry fly. The hot spot of the week has been Sam’s or Reedy Point, Shear Point and Lochend but good baskets were reported from most drifts – including the Malling shore. Tactics have generally been the slow fished team of buzzers on a sink or ghost tip - and when we lost the bright weather, the dry fly was tempting.
The Scottish Polis (left) carried away the European Police Championship Trophy when their 8 man team bagged 20 fish for 39lbs and returned 12 fish. A close second were the Republic of Ireland’s Garda with 28 fish overall. England were 3rd, Wales 4th, N.Ireland 5th and Austria 6th.  The 59 anglers caught 116 fish.

Bill Barnes emerged (below right) as the new Scottish Disabled Angler’s National Champion. Bill netted 18 fish for 35lbs 13oz (ret 13) and was fishing buzzers on a sink tip at Sam’s and Shear Point.  2nd was Jim Crawford with 12 fish and 3rd Andrew Neilson with 7. Qualifying for the Scottish Disabled Angling Team were the afore mentioned and; Frank Richardson, Brian Peterson, Fraser Renwick, Robert Chisolm and David Penny. The 26 anglers bagged 59 fish and returned 22.

In the 2nd Heat of the Scottish Club Championships Sponsored by the Daily Record, Angling Centre Stirling and Famous Grouse Whisky - the 48 anglers bagged 69 fish for 156lbs – there was no catch and release. In first place were Lothian and Borders Police (Niven, Gillespie and Dixon) with 9 fish for 19lbs 11oz,  2nd Leslie Llannilar with 9 fish for 18lbs 12oz and 3rd were Kinglassie AC with 8 fish for 17lbs 15. Through to the Champion of Champion’s Final are Mark Sturrock, Paul Wilson, Steve Docherty . Best tactics on the night were buzzers, buzzers, blob or diawl bach at Sam’s Point or the Malling Shore. The winners, top rod and heaviest fish (Charlie Brown/Mark Sturrock) received bottles of Famouse Angler Whisky.

On the First night of the Angling Centre Stirling Menteith Boat League the 35 anglers landed 102 fish for 208lbs. There were 14 limit bags of 5 fish. Jim Crawford and Neil Anderson collected the fly line prizes for the heaviest bag and heaviest fish.

Other Catches: Heriots 7 boats 4 bagged 52rtd, CSP 5 boats 26 fish 52lbs, LLAC 10 boats 30 fish 62lbs, IBM 8 boats 37 fish 86lbs, Strathclyde Police 10 boats 48 trout 97lbs.

We have 4 boats available for each of the next two Saturday Evening Sessions.
