28th April 2008Menteith Weekly Report6ft Water Temp: 9C, Clarity (secchi disk): 2.9m Fish appetite continues to improve as the water column heats up. This, combined with a big improvement in clarity over the last few days, has helped the angler. Daphnia has been in abundance recently. Hot spots have been West Gateside, Heronry/Malling, Tod Hole/Butts and most recently the road shore. Sink tips are currently the most popular line, and anglers have been using a variety flies and techniques depending on the conditions. Evening Fishing starts next week (5th May) which should be of some consolation to those who have been unable to get a day boat of recent due to SANA and Civil Service Heats. The next available day boat at the time of writing is the 13th May. "STOP PRESS" EVENING FISHING WILL START ON
FRIDAY 2ND MAY. WE ARE STARTING EARLY THIS YEAR AS THE THE SCOTTISH
CLUBS COMPETITION HAVE ASKED THAT WE MAKE A PRACTICE NIGHT AVAILABLE
PRIOR TO THE FIRST SCOTTISH CLUB HEAT ON 3RD MAY. Expect the Unexpected
Douglas Lorimer (above left) of West of Scotland AC landed this size 3 sandal from Kates Brae on an intermediate line equipped with a cormorant. Only the 3rd shoe I know of to be boated in the last 10 years – all have been children’s sizes. These stones (above right) were removed from the stomach of a 2½ lb rainbow caught in a Central Scotland fishery (not Menteith), and demonstrates what these fish are capable of swallowing (they were in the fish when they were caught).
