Gary MacGinlay (below) from Cumbernauld with the best fish (9lbs 13oz) from Opening Day 2008. Taken on a Nomad at Gateside. In all the 32 boats weighed in 161 fish for 371lbs. A further 105 fish were recorded as released. This was the best start to the season since 2005 – and there was a fair proportion of over-wintered fish in the bags.
Despite the bitter air conditions – water temperatures have been colder - 3.5C for the 2006 opening day. The fishing was concentrated at Gateside Bay and Hotel Bay due to the strength of the northerlies but as the wind moderated other drifts came into play (Stable Point, Rookery and the Heronry). There was quite a hatch of buzzers on Sunday. Lochend had settled down by Monday and the wind direction looked good for the Butts on Tuesday.
Some tactics on the first few days were intermediate, slime or sink tip lines with lures (cat, nomad, boobies, blob) combined with cormorants and buzzers. The trick was often to cast close to the reeds. On Monday in continuing cold conditions the 30 boats landed 111 fish for 253lbs. Stanley AC (7 boats) 33 fish, ICI Dumfries 6 boats 23 fish, Rowbank 5 boats 11 fish.
