116th Scottish Anglers National Fly Fishing Championship Results
Ronald Gilbert (pictured left) of Crookedholm by Kilmarnock, and representing
the well known Ayrshire Angling Club Thack, is the 2008 Scottish Fly Fishing
Champion. The 35 year old was clearly delighted to be champion and it was
no surprise as Ronald consistently catches a lot of fish at the Lake, and
had been tipped by one or two as a possible champion.
Ronald, who has one cap already, is looking forward to rejoining the Scottish Angling Team. The tactics that caught made him champ (12 fish for 24lbs 14oz) were a sunburst blob on the point and two nymphs (diawl bach types) and fishing in Hotel Bay and International Bay.
Alan Porteous of (Dounreay FFA) was 2nd with 11 fish for 23lbs 9.8oz was and 3rd Erland Hutchison of the Orkney Trout Fishing Association with 10 fish for 21lbs 10oz.
Ewan Clark of Strathtyrum AC (right) caught the biggest fish in the final and his personal best from the Lake – a 9lb 4.8oz resident taken on a cormorant from Gateside Bay. These four individuals along with A.Hill, S.McConnachie, D.Wales, J.Kettles, G.Martin, K.McCabe, C.Morgan, B.Robertson, N.Burns, A.Morgan, W.Leach, J.McBride, D.Mackay, D.Scott and K.Oliver qualify to fish for the national team.
