Menteith Weekly Report

22nd Oct 2007

6ft water temperature 13 C; Clarity 2.8m

Peter Auchterlonie confirmed his status in the higher echelons of competition trout angling when he won the Daily Record Champion of Champions at the Lake on Friday 19th October.

Peter of Creiff AC landed 14 trout for 31lbs 9 ½ oz. In second place was Ronald Gilbert of Thack AC with 12 fish for 27lbs 5 ½ oz. In 3rd place was Andy MacKay with 10 fish for 22lbs 6oz. The 55 competitors landed 219 fish with an average weight of 2½ lbs. Peter who won £300 and a fly rod (courtesy of the Angling Centre Stirling) was fishing International Bay and Reedy Point with a nymph and two orange blobs, put his good catch down to making the moves at the right time. It is a fairly deliberate ploy of the Scottish Club Championship Committee and secretary Kenny Millar to limit prize money in order to maintain sportsmanship. Kenny’s main financial effort has been to levy the anglers taking part, not for prize money but for donations to charity. This year the anglers taking part in the Scottish Club Championships raised over £2700 for the Scott MacIver appeal for Yorkhill Sick Childrens Hospital.

CAGES OFF:Gateside Bay was opened to the anglers on Monday 22nd. Three on grown fish of around 6lbs were taken. Alasdair Mair (left) and James Litster (middle) had more luck than John Buchanan who captured the second shoe recorded caught at the Lake in the last 10 years. A beautiful 12lb fish was captured on Tuesday (pictures with captor next week). The Lake closes on Wednesday 31st October.

Other Results: The newest competition at the Lake - the Menteith Pairs Challenge organised by Kenny Miller was won by Derek Keenan and Gus Shepard, 2nd was John Sutton and John Rudolph and 3rd Jake Harvey and David Wright. The 18 boats landed 76 fish for 207lbs. Thack AC 6 boats 24 fish for 53lbs, Central Scotland Police 6 boats 28 fish for 79lbs.
