Menteith Report

22nd May

6ft Water Temp: 12.5C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.5m

Some strong westerlies this week have piled the fish on to the Road Shore – which has fished well during the calmer periods, but anglers have also reported good catches from all the drifts. Despite the wind the boats managed to get out each day – just. We have had huge hatches of buzzers this week and this is what the fish are on, although the lures blob, booby etc are always tempting. Method of the week when conditions prevail has been the static buzzer.

Steven McVean (left) of the Port of Menteith and a member of the Lake’s young angler’s fishing club the Cormorants, landed this 6lb 12oz over-wintered fish from Gateside Bay.

Results:
On Thursday 17th the Lake hosted the Scottish Police Fly fishing Championships. 36 boats landed 165 fish for 340lbs. The new Police Champion is Alan Hill from Troon (below right) and he is pictured receiving the trophy from Paddy Tomkins (on left of picture) of Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary Scotland. Alan had his 6 fish by 11.30am and was fishing at Tod Hole/Butts with a static hopper (size 14) and a floating line. 2nd place went to Brian Clifton of Lothian and Borders. The winning team who go on to fish in the UK Championships at Bewl was Jim McBride, Brian Clifton, Kenny Hall and Steve Lamb of Lothian and Borders.
