Menteith Report

6ft Water Temp: 13C Secchi Disk Gateside: 2.5m

May Summary:May was a wet, cold and windy month and water temperature finished up at only 12C at 6ft. Catch numbers in May were down slightly (4%)on last May and mean weight was quite a bit lower at 2lbs (last May 2.36lbs). Fishing effort and fish stocked was similar to last year. Perhaps the slight drop in catch numbers was due to the exceptionally warm start and good catches in April. The 2 man 8 hr boat average catch was 4.4 fish. 13% of the fish caught were returned. Fishing has been concentrated on the eastern shores from Lochend to Shear Point.

The Past week has seen the competition angling pressure tail off markedly – with only a handful of boats out on Monday day and none on Monday evening. The fish will be seeing less flies and perhaps be less wise! Summer is on its way at Menteith – we have had a couple of warm evenings (and midges) and the south easterly winds have no doubt moved the fish to the north a little. Good catches are now being reported from all over, but it probably still pays to visit the Road shore, Shear point, Sam’s Point and the Rookery/Gateside drifts. Best catch yesterday was a 12 fish limit all on Cul de Canards.

Results:
On Wed 30th and Thurs 31st May, the Scierra Pairs Heats were held at the Lake. Winners of heat 1 were Campbell Morgan and Donald Forbes (pictured above left with competition organiser Howell Morgan wearing blue shirt). On the second day the winners were Ian skilling and Alan Gilbert, pictured above right.
5th Evening Heat; Scottish Club Championships Results – sponsored by the Daily Record with additional prizes from the Angling Centre Stirling.
24 boats landed 66 fish for 127lbs. Top 3 man team were CSSA Rosyth, 2nd Strathtyrum and 3rd Stanley and District. These teams go forward to the semi-final on 21/9/07. Top four individuals qualifying for the Champion of Champions were G.Mathieson (CSSA), E.Clarke (Strathtyrum), J.Kyle (Balfron Pisc.) and A.Whyte (Strathgryfe). Top tactics – 4 size 14 flies (Wickams, diawl bach) fished buzzer style on midge tip at Malling, Rookery and Roadshore. Teams for next heat are: Airdrie & Dist "A", Ayr A.C."B", Bank of Scotland (East), Barrhead A.C., Clatto & Stratheden, Eaglesham Fly Fishers "A", Dunfermline Rusty Nail, Earlston A.A., Edinburgh Civil Service, Ferry Fly Fishers "B", Grizzlecats "A", Horrywood A.C., Kelso A.A."B", Lochinch A.C."A", Monifieth Trout "B", North Berwick A.C., Pitlochry A.C., Phoenix A.C..

In the 3rd heat of the Menteith Boat League sponsored by Angling Centre Stirling, Derek Barclay was top bag with 6 fish for 11lbs 15oz. 2nd was Dougie Ingles and 3rd Andy Dunn. Heaviest fish Alec Barnes (5lb 1oz) The heaviest fish and best bag received an Airflow Sixth Sense Line. Tom Taggart received the duck. The 29 anglers landed 52 fish for 93lbs.
Club Results: Grangemouth ? boats 52 fish for 97lbs, Grizzlecats ? boats 11 fish, Bank of Scot 6 boats 24 fish , Good Companions 7 boats 34 fish, Caley Liners 8 boats 31 fish and SANA Youth 8 boats 16 fish.
