Fishery Report Menteith Weekly Report 16th October

Troots Pip Soldiers by 2oz
The tightness of the margin of victory after 14 heats and two semi-finals involving over 250 three man club teams, must have left one or two folk thinking “what if” over the weekend. Full credit to the Edinburgh Trout Anglers – and it is their name that will be gold leafed in the board room at Menteith. Thanks to our main sponsors the Daily Record and to the Angling Centre Stirling for additional prizes.

Kenny Woods, Dave Bonnington and Walter Archibald of Edinburgh Trout Anglers.

Club Championship Results

Dave Bonnington 36 of Loanhead said that the dull overhead conditions suited the trooties tactics which were to stay high up in the water with imitative patterns (predominantly slender cormorants and white cats). Dave caught most of his 8 fish in the top 18” whilst fishing in the rookery. Kenny Wood 50, of Longniddry had his 9 fish on a fast glass fishing off the Rookery and Reedy Point. Walter Archibald of Ormiston 52, had his 8 fish on a sink tip – and landed two in the last five minutes. Hardlines to the Soldier Palmers (Ronnie Christie, Jock Ryan and James Gardiner – now firmly established as one of the best fly fishing teams in the UK. Third placed were Rothes Oak AC.

Other Menteith News

A fit and fantastic on grown rainbow of 10lbs 13oz caught by Alan Lawson (above) from Finzean Aberdeenshire, who writes….
“My fish was caught in close to the now ashore cages, I was using a Di 7 line and an orange tailed Humungus. We had all agreed that it would be the last cast of the day before we went in, so perseverance counts.”

Some great looking on grown specimens have appeared in the catches this week. The final stocking of the Lake for 2006 will take place this week with 800 fish poised to be released.

Fishing has been mainly in the top couple of feet of water with a lot of catches tending to be close into the reeds where the Lake fry find sanctuary. Top areas have been the Shore Road to Lochend and up to the Butts, Heronry and cages and the Rookery.

First Lake Cormorants Youth Champion
