Bright sunshine, warmth and strong easterlies have been a feature of the current weather. Clear skies at night have slowed water temperature increase – which now is 13C at 6ft in Gateside Bay. Clarity is 2.1m in Gateside Bay (but will be higher upwind). We can expect some big buzzer hatches in the next weeks as the late spring early summer arrives. Over the weekend light winds and overcast conditions were ideal for buzzer fishing and best bags were in the shallow areas of Gateside Bay, Roadshore, Reedy point, and Heronry using buzzer techniques. When the wind and sun arrived the general trend was for deeper methods and mini-lures to be deployed.

Scottish Club Championships Results – sponsored by the Daily Record: The first heat took place on 6th May. During the 4hr evening session, the 54 anglers landed 66 fish for 134lbs. Top 3 man team on the night were Change Fly Fishers with 11 fish for 26lbs 10oz. 2nd were CSSA Rosyth with 8 fish for 20lbs 3oz and 3rd were Rowbank AC with 7 fish for 15lbs 13oz. These teams go forward to the semi-finals. Top four individuals qualifying for the Champion of Champions were K.McCabe 6 fish (pictured above with aerial fish), G.Mathieson 5 fish, J.MacLean 5 fish and D.Gibb 5 fish. Top tactic – buzzers, Gateside, sink tip.

There was a catch limit of eight fish. Once this was reached all fish were returned with an assumed weight of 2lbs. 55 anglers caught 272 trout of which 259 were weighed in for 572lbs. All were bows apart from 5 brown trout. The top 3 bags on the day were Eddie Craney (Rose and Thistle) 11 fish, Robert Baldi (West Coast Fly) 13 fish and Jock Kettles (Thalasa) 10 fish. 45% of anglers qualified and the cut off weight for qualification was 11lbs 3oz.

Club results: Aberfoyle FC (3 boats) 16 fish for 32lbs, Civil Service (20 boats) 41 fish 88lbs. Top team CSSA Rosyth and runners up Centre 1. Kelvinside Accies FP (5 boats) 34 fish 74lbs (plus 3 pike). Scotsman AC 4 boats 15 fish for 30lbs, Pencaitland AC 25 fish for 58lbs.
