Fishery Report 6th June & Monthly Summary

6ft Water Temp: 18C Secchi Disk Gateside:1.6m

More settled weather this week and some strong sunshine has caused a big temperature rise to 18C at 6ft in Gateside Bay. With more fine weather forecast - temperatures are set to increase further. Clarity should increase as the water column stops mixing and stratifies. In the past week the majority of the good catches have been reported from the Shore Road (Shear Pin to Lochend) and the Malling Shore (Roman Bay). Tactics have been slow intermediate lines (Kelly green/WC1) with a washing line set up (booby on point with two diawl bach type flies) or a gold head on the point to sink the flies a bit more again with diawl bach type nymphs. The small flies have taken the fish - the larger flies are to aid the positioning and to attract the fish. Small lures have also been successful though, and again it is the highly visible dark patterns with a contrasting feature that are catching the eye, e.g. the Montana and the cormorant. Some dry fly fishing has also been successful – with notable mayfly and olive hatches. The onset of warmer water temperatures might mean that the fish will go deeper as the surface layers become unacceptably hot.

May 2006 Results Summary
The average 2 man boat catch for the 8hr day session was 4.8 fish for 11lbs 5oz. For a 5hr evening session the average catch for a 2 man boat was 3 fish for 7lbs 1oz. These figures are calculated pro rata on the total hours fished and the total numbers of fish caught and include fish recorded as released. The figures are up relative to last May by 11% in terms of average number caught and 20% in terms of basket weight. The average fish weight was 2lbs 6oz.

5th Evening Heat; Scottish Club Championships Results – sponsored by the Daily Record. The 27 boats landed 102 fish for 218lbs. Top 3 man team were Kilburnie AC with 17 fish for 39lbs 15oz. 2nd were Aberfoyle with 11 fish for 25lbs 12oz and 3rd were Newtyle and Meigle with 12 fish for 25lbs 2oz. These teams go forward to the semi-finals. Top four individuals qualifying for the Champion of Champions were R.Fleming 8 fish, S.Kerr 7 fish, J.Turner 4 fish and D.Adams 5 fish. Top tactics washing line (booby, diawl bachs, wet cell 1) at Shear Pin Point.

Menteith Boat League – sponsored by the Angling Centre Stirling. In the third outing of the 2006 Boat League, P.Garner was top rod with a 7 fish limit for 18lbs 3oz, 2nd was G.Hayward with 7 fish and 3rd C.Osborne with 6 fish and also the heaviest fish at 3lbs 8oz. Top place in the league is now shared between G.Hayward and D.Paterson on 20pts with J.Wright on 25. The top rod and heaviest fish received a Boat League t-shirt courtesy of the sponsor. The 36 anglers caught 104 fish for 228lbs.
