May Summary
A record number of fish were landed at Menteith for the month of May (4193 for 8553lbs), representing an average catch per boat hire of 4 fish for 8lbs 2½ oz. Fish average weight was 2lb 1/2 oz.

Current water temperature has risen by 4 degrees in the past 7 days and is now 18C at 6ft, clarity has dropped slightly to 2.2m but is still favourable to top of the water tactics. The fish are hungrier and faster! An abundance of natural feed is on offer (fry, buzzers, spinners) and successful methods have been the floating line and a dry olive/cdc /buzzers/sedges/bibio/muddler or a slow sink line and pulling with blobs, hughmungus, damsels and boobies. Hot spots are Stable Point, Gateside Bay, Reedy Point, Road Shore, Lochend and the Butts.

Club Results and other Notable Catches

26th May: SANA Ladies (6 boats) 19 fish for 37lbs, T.Ward (Cumnock) 15 fish for 33lbs. 27th May: Lothian and Borders Police (eve) 8 boats 16 fish for 37lbs.

28th May: UK Fire Service Fly Fishing Championships - 38 boats landed 126 fish for 290lbs. Top bag was Jim Twaddle (pictured) of Strathclyde (black cat/road shore) with 8 fish for 16lbs 13oz and a 2¼ hr time bonus. 2nd was D.Shadbolt (Herts – buzzers Stable Point) with 6 fish for 15lbs 1oz and 3rd was M.Cordiner (Grampian) with 7 fish for 14lbs.




In the evening the 2nd outing of the Glenkinchie Boat League landed 47 fish from 11 boats. Top bag was Kevin McCabe on floating line/buzzers with 5 fish for 15lbs 10oz, 2nd was A.Ronald with 5 fish for 12lb 6oz and 3rd was D.Paterson (DI3 and mini-lures) with 6 fish for 10lbs 12oz. The new league leader is Alan Ronald.

29th May: W.Ramage/W.Smith (Alva) 15 fish for 36lbs.

30th May: Scottish Civil Service National Final (30 boats) 123 fish for 260lbs. Top two man team was Riverside Deuces from Perth, 2nd was Centre 1 and 3rd was Scottish Prison Service. Top bag was Kenny McLucken, 2nd top bag M.Anderson – both using floating tactics.

31st May: Johnstone Flyfishers (7 boats) 28 fish for 54lbs, C.Cowan 11 fish for 21lbs, Grangemouth AC (8 boats) 27 fish for 54lbs, Good Companion AC (7 boats) 38 fish for 77lbs.

In the evening the 54 anglers taking part in the Scottish Interclub Championships caught 86 fish weighing 179lbs. The winning 3 man team was current champs Strathleven AC with 14 fish for 26lbs 4oz, 2nd St.Serfs (B) with 11 fish for 19lbs 11oz and 3rd were Beith St.Inans with 9 fish for 18lbs 5oz. These clubs go forward to the semi-final on the 12th September. The heaviest fish (4lb 6oz) was caught by T. Brown of Beith St.Inans. Most productive angler on the night alternated between humungus/boobies and bibio/muddler combinations on the Road shore. The winner of the Champion of Champions and next weeks teams will be available in the competitions sponsor – the Daily Record. The winning club, best individual and heaviest fish all received Bowmore Whisky.

1st June: Caley Liners (7 boats) 25 fish for 53lbs, Lady Kirk AC (5 boats) 11 fish for 23lbs.
