The 2003 Menteith Season Opened on Saturday 29th March - after a welcome from company chairman John Ingleby and some fine tunes from Port of Menteith Piper Donnie Cameron.

It was a windy and cold start but with the warmth of the water (6ft water temperature 10oC) catches were bound to be good and the total for the day of 281 fish for 583lbs (av.wt. 2lbs 1oz, catch rate per boat 9.4 fish for 19.4lbs) - a record in recent times. Heaviest limit bag was 38lbs from Siichi and Donald (Lennoxtown). Other limits taken were: Willis and Hamilton (Dunblane), Muckle Bros (Bridge of Earn), Auchterlonie and Mackay (Creiff), D.Bradshaw (Galsgow), Tom Howe (Kilmarnock), Earle and Batchelor (Stirling), Morgan, Forbes and Fullerton (Strathleven), Milne and McKinnon (Paisley). Best fish on the day was 6lb 5oz from Hotel Bay by Peter Auchterlonie. Predominant technique was intermediate or slow sinking lines withblack and green mini-lures. The fish were found mainly on the exposed shores: Hotel Bay, Road Shore, Lochend and the Butts. Takes were usually at the shore and often on the hang. Spooned fish contained black buzzers and overwintered fish accounted for 5-10% of the catch.

Calmer conditions prevailed on the Sunday with the 29 boats landing 117 fish for 200lbs. Dalziel (7 boats) 30 fish for 60lbs.

Some fine overwintered specimens were landed including a magnificent fish of 8lbs 2oz by Jim Mackie of Dalziel from the road shore using a regulation sized (1 1/4") orange dancer.
