Menteith Ospreys Scottish Club Champions
Menteith Ospreys, pictured left –, comprising left to right; Peter Auchterlonie, Competition sponsor Martin Grantham of Angling Active, Ronald Gilbert and George Whyte, are the Ruby (40th) Scottish Club Champions.

After many years of close finishes in the past, the Ospreys had this title firmly in their sights and were delighted to finally land the silver salver. The Ospreys are certainly a strong team on paper – all are ex internationalists, Peter and Ronnie are recent ex national Champs and Peter is also an ex- Menteith Boat League Champion. Their competitors were quick to congratulate them on their catch of 23 fish for 50lbs 13oz. In Second place with 21 fish for 46lbs 13oz were Strathleven FF ‘A’, pictured below (Donald Forbes, Campbell Morgan and Peter Batchelor). In third place was Newton Mearns FF, pictured below right with 21 fish (John Buchanan, Kenny Hunter and Billy Dewar).

The winning team received a £300 cheque and a rod or a £200 tackle voucher (each) from sponsors Angling Active. Top bag in the comp was Ronnie Gilbert from Ayrshire with 11 fish. Ronnie was twiddling an airflow midge tip line with a tequila blob and cormorants further up, all day, at Lochend. The takes were more or less evenly divided between the blob and the cormorants. The rest of his team were fishing the same set up at Reedy Point, Gateside  or the Butts. Peter deviated on to a Di 5 for his spell in the cages and picked up 2 on this line. Interestingly, Peter and Ronnie both and bleeding index fingers as a result of fast fish takes!  2nd placed team picked up a £200 SCC cheque and Grey’s reels (courtesy of the sponsor) and 3rd placed collected a cheque for £200 and fly lines. The 20 teams netted 235 fish in total and weighed in 111 fish for 297lbs 7oz, giving a rod average of 3.95 (which wasn’t bad considering the blustery conditions) with a fish mean weight of 2lbs 11oz.

Notable Results: LBPAC 12 boats 65 fish for 138lbs plus 36rtd, Scotsman AC 3 boats 17 trout for 38lbs & 3rtd, J.Horne and Co. 10 fish for 28lbs 11oz, Kelvinside AC 4 boats 7 fish 20lbs, Priory AC 3 boats 7 fish 18lbs, Steve Docherty Fort William 14 rtd, CSP versus N.Yorks 7 boats 18 fish for 48lbs and 28 rtd,  EKAC 10 boats 27 fish for 69lbs and 23rtd,Stewarton AC 7 boats 30 trout 87lbs, Locher AC 4 boats 16 fish 40lbs.

A cracking rise today (Tues 2nd) as I was out putting in what I what I reckon must be the biggest stockies I’ve seen during my time at the Lake  - and there are more to come.
