Menteith Angling Centre Stirling Boat League 2011

As you will see the ACS are sponsoring the prizes for another year, which is great news for the competition which is going into its 10th year. The main difference this year is the drop in kill limit to two fish per angler - with catch and release taken in to account thereafter. Below - somebody said something about needing a bigger couch.

We sent out a questionnaire, to last years entrants and to new applicants, regarding how best to adopt this new limit into the boat league. 89% wanted Option A (choose your boat partner), 11% option B (randomised boat partners). Many thanks to those who replied and also for additional comments given. With respect to the question re electric outboards, 67% wanted to exclude outboards from the competition and 17% wanted them allowed. 16% expressed no opinion. The reply rate to the survey was 45%.

Competition Rules 2011
The competition will be fished to a two fish kill with catch and release thereafter. Catch cards will be provided and should be signed by your boat partner. Hooks must be de-barbed when fishing catch and release. No electric outboards allowed. No launching before 6pm. Otherwise fishery rules apply. Anglers arriving prior to 5.30pm can enter there names into a hat for allocation of a boat partner, or can select their partner. Single anglers can fish in the heats but only one score when “single angling” will count towards the competition.

There will be 15 heats, 11th May to 17th Aug inclusive. This year’s final league position will be determined on the basis of the member’s top 9 placements. On the final and prize giving heat (17th Aug), there will be food and refreshments served at the fishery. There will be a weekly prize for the biggest bag, with returned fish counting as 2lbs and a weight cap on individual fish at 4lbs. The biggest bag heat prizes will be £20 vouchers. Alternatively participants can choose an Airflow line from the Sixth Sense Series (Di7, Di5, Di3, fast glass, slow glass, midge tip and floating) which retails at £34.99.
There will be no heaviest fish heat prizes this year. Instead Martin is going to convert this into a one off prize. This prize will be awarded to the best performing individual with who has had the most boat partners in his counting score and will be calculated by dividing the league score by the number of different boat partners. League registration is £20 and all this money is used for placement cash prizes or charitable donation. The League Winner will receive £150 in cash, 2nd £100 and 3rd £50. The winner nominates which charity receives the balance (£500 in 2010).
To enter the 2011 league please email Quint or Douglas or phone us (see contact page).

Please let us know if you will not be turning up for heats. If we know in advance if there will be an odd number of anglers, we can take steps to get an angler in to even up the numbers.

Results 2011

It was a nail biting finish to the Boat League –with only one point in it after fifteen heats, with the top nine counting. On the last night 16 anglers caught 61 fish (54 of these were returned). Top rod on the night with 12 fish was Mark Steven – fishing heather fly type dries in Gatesideand Malling. 2nd was Brian MacKenzie with 10 and 3rd James Fairlie with 6 fish.  Traffic signal engineer Brian MacKenzie from Clydebank was the winner of this year’s League with 24points, one point less than a very close 2nd, James Fairlie of Houston, Renfrewshire. Ken Oliver was third with 33 points.

Left: Left to right; Winner Brian MacKenzie, sponsor Martin Grantham and 2nd placed James Fairlie.

Left; James Fairlie – Boat Leaguer with most different boat partners holds the Alan Ronald Memorial Trophy.

Brian MacKenzie won £150 and the trophy and chose to donate the kitty money to Motor Neurone Disease Scotland (£250 and Port of Menteith Primary School £70). (The accounts; £620 received, £300 prize money leaves £320 for charity. Lake Fisheries paid for the final night’s food and drink and provided free fishing for contestants on the last night.) The other award on the night was for the most sociable league member (i.e. the angler with most different boat partners over the course of the summer). This was apparently a “no brainer” with Jim Twaddle taking the trophy. Luckily Jim couldn’t make the final night as, in the clear light of day it was found that we did indeed have no brains and that James Fairlie was the most sociable angler with 10 different boat partners as apposed to Jim’s 7. Well done James – and hard lines Jim. For his efforts James was awarded a Vision Rod GT 44 rod from the Angling Centre Stirling which retails at £250 (but can be exchanged for something else – contact Martin). Over the course of the 2011 League heats, Martin Grantham of ACS gave out over £750 pounds worth of fly lines (15 different winners) bringing his total sponsorship of the league to over £1000. Brian’s secret to winning the league - CDC’s and hoppers.
