The Lake of Menteith Boat League sponsored by Baynes Tackle of Callander and the Lake, variously known as the Friendly League and occasionally known as the World Lake and Loch Style Boat League Championship, or simply the Premier Boat League, is open for registration for the 2014 season.

To get your name on some of the £1500 worth of prizes and cash at stake and more importantly some pleasant evening's fishing, contact Douglas or Quint to register (see web contact page).

2014 Results

We are very pleased to announce that Glen Garioch Malt whisky the official Lake Malt, have donated a bottle of whisky for each heat winner. So this coupled with Baynes £25 voucher sponsorship gives the Premier Boat League a real edge.

Note to all participants. Just to clarify. Fishery rules must be obeyed - with particular reference to fly size and leaving at 6pm. Time of first fish to be verified by boat partner. The rules also say that flies should be debarbed when fishing catch and release. In the light of recent hook developments the "should" remains, and indicates a preference rather than a rule. Any queries - please get in touch. Drogues to be attached at central point.

Final Baynes and Glen Garioch Boat League Results 2014

WELL DONE KEIR HARDIE. Keir won £500 cash and a £100 voucher from Baynes of Callander. 2nd placed Andy Kemp won £100 cash and a £75 Baynes' gift voucher and 3rd place Bill Ramage walked off with £50 cash and a £50 Baynes gift voucher. WELL DONE ALL THE PARTICIPANTS and a huge thank you to Baynes Tackle of Callander and Morrison Bowmore for supplying so many prizes. Alec Galloway won the Alan Ronald Trophy for being the best newcomer. In all the anglers landed 1314 fish and the value of the prizes was over £2000, including the £350 allocated for charitable donation.

Joiner Keir Hardie (41) from Hamilton said he learnt alot last year - especially how to handle hot conditions with boobies and dabblers (size 10). If two boobies (candy and cats) on a fast sinker were not working, he would swap them out for three dabblers (black yellow and orange). His deep retreive at Gateside was to count to 60 then figure eight back. When fish started to move up he generally changed to a midge tip with snatchers and diawls.

On the last night Ken Oliver had one of, if not the best bag of the whole competition, with 21 fish. Ken was fishing a midge tip washing line with boobies at either end and two diawls in the middle.

The reckoning. The anglers contributed £720 by way of a kitty and the fishery donated the boat league fees and food and drink for the final night (£280). £650 was given out in Cash prizes - leaving £350 for charity. Keir nominated cancer research.

A minutes silence was held in memory of Gordon MacGregor.

Thanks to all for another great year and we are now excepting reservations for the 2015 BOAT LEAGUE. Don't be two downhearted if you finished some way down the table - next year we intend to help the flow of skills from the haves to the have knots, by instigating a random partner draw procedure. On arrival you put your name into a hat - with partners being selected by draw. Guests will be allowed, but must go into the boat partner draw on the night. Any other ideas please let us know before next spring. QG

GEORGE WHYTE IS THE 2013 BOAT LEAGUE CHAMPION

George Whyte from Muthil is 2013 BAYNES AND MENTEITH BOAT LEAGUE CHAMPION. Plumbing and heating engineer (and farm hand for his Dad) George ground out his win over fifteen heats of the boat league in the most closely contested league ever at the Lake.  George is pictured left with boat league sponsor and tackle shop owner Roger Drapper of Baynes fishing tackle Callander. Champ George carried off the trophy, £500cash  and a £100 tackle voucher. George also gets to nominate the residual registration fee of £137 to his favourite cause The Muthil Preschool. George’s top 9 finishes out of a possible 15 (he missed two nights) included three 1st places, three 2nd places, two 3rd places and a 5th placing; giving him a total of 20 points. George paid tribute to his fellow leaguers, describing it as the most sociable and friendly competition around - probably due to the mandatory rotation of boat partners. The secret of his success? Early adoption of more successful tactics........Second place was a three way tie between Ken Oliver, James Fairlie and Alan Machlachlan - all of whom received £50. 1170 fish were caught on the 15 nights. As the anglers had different boat partners every night, the Alan Ronald Memorial Trophy was awarded to Davie Stewart from the Port. David succeeded in catching the fewest trout over his best 9 night (usual boat partner roger was disqualified due to his involvement in prize sponsorship ). David (to be fair he was always late due to work) wins a £25 tackle voucher, a voucher for dinner for two at the Lake Hotel and a free boat at the Lake. In all Baynes of Callander sponsorship was £525 worth of tackle vouchers, whilst the Lake donated £450 (cash, buffet and prizes) whilst competitors registration fees drew in £540 all of which was given out in prize money.
On the final night of the boat league Keir Hardie was first with 13 fish, 2nd was George Whyte with 12 and 3rd Alan MacLachlan with 10. Keir was fishing a floating line, diawl bachs or dries (black knat) in the vivinity of stable Point. George was fishing in Gateside with two black and red buzzers, held up by a candy booby. The 19 anglers netted 76 fish.

James Baynes Fishing Tackle (Angling Centre Callander) Boat League 2012

Our sponsor for this year is James Bayne Fishing Tackle and we'd like to warmly welcome owner Roger Drapper as Menteith Boat League Sponsor. Bayne's Tackle is situated in the centre of Callander and the best way to introduce the business is to send you for a look around their website: http://www.fishingtackleshopuk.co.uk/. Shop owner Roger Drapper is the convenor of fishing for the incorporation of Skinners and Glovers of the Trades House of Glasgow, formed in the year 1516. Roger Drapper has also been president and secretary of The Western Angling Club which began in 1879.

Competition Rules 2012
Last year the competition began with a two fish kill limit followed by catch and release thereafter. Many anglers didn't want to kill any fish and so it was decided to make the boat league a total catch and release competition (but individuals could keep some for the table according to need), with the timing of the capture of the first trout seperating equal bags numbers. We will be running the competition along similar lines in 2012. If you want to take some fish for the pot - simply pay a little more for the 3 or 5 fish bag limit. Catch cards will be provided and should be signed by your boat partner. No doubles are allowed when fishing catch and release. No electric outboards allowed. No launching before 6pm. Otherwise fishery rules apply. Anglers arriving prior to 5.30pm can enter there names into a hat for allocation of a boat partner, or can select their partner. Single anglers can fish in the heats but only one score when “single angling” will count towards the competition.

The objective of the Boat League is to have a convivial evening and to share some tips and stories and therefor the Alan Ronald Memorial Prize will be awarded to the most sociable angler (see below).

There will be 15 heats, 9th May to 15th Aug inclusive. This year’s final league position will be determined on the basis of the member’s top 9 placements. On the final and prize giving heat (15th Aug), there will be food and refreshments served at the fishery. There will be a weekly prize for the biggest bag, with returned fish counting as 2lbs. The biggest bag heat prizes will be £25 Baynes Tackle Vouchers vouchers. Bayne's Tackle will award a prize to the best performing individual with who has had the most boat partners in his counting score and will be calculated by dividing the league score by the number of different boat partners. League registration is £20 and all this money is used for placement cash prizes or charitable donation. The League Winner will receive £200 in cash, 2nd £100 and 3rd £50. The winner nominates which charity receives the balance (£320 in 2011).

BAYNES BOAT LEAGUE FINAL RESULTS 2012

BIG LIFT FOR JAMES!
BAYNE’S TACKLE (OF CALLANDER) MENTEITH BOAT LEAGUE FINAL RESULTS
Isla (Roger’s Dog) on left congratulates League winner James Fairlie (left), middle Roger Drapper of Bayne’s Tackle Callander and right George Whyte who finished in 2nd place.
The final heat of the Baynes Boat League was won by James Fairlie with George Whyte coming second and Sandy Boag third. James got his 5 fish on five different flies at Gateside and in the East Basin. The 22 anglers caught 28 trout. When all the results were tallied and the best of the angler’s eligible nights totalled,  James Fairlie best 9 nights gave him the League Title with 33pts (1 pt for first place, 2pts for 2nd place etc) and a cash prize of £500. In 2nd place was George Whyte from Crieff with 33pts who received £100, and third equal on 39pts and receiving £50 were Sandy Boag and Brian MacKenzie. To cap it all the Alan Ronald Memorial prize for the most sociable angler (calculated by dividing the angler’s counting score by the number of different boat partners involved in the counting score) was won by James as well, and he received a tackle voucher for £100 from Roger Drapper of Baynes Tackle as well as the fish trophy. Modest James of Houston denied he was the best angler in the league – most observers would disagree as the boat league is about consistency not luck. His secret this year? “Don’t know, trying different things”. 2012 was generally considered to be one of the best boat leagues – due to the anglers choosing different boat partners each night.  The fantastic sponsor ship of Baynes Tackle who gave out £500 worth of tackle vouchers went down well! Davie Stewart of Taste of the Trossachs generously donated the burgers and rolls on the night as well as £150 of meal vouchers for his Callander Restaurant. The Lake this year contributed £260 in prize money (thanks for all the catch and release) and £60 for the final night for refreshments. Big thanks to all the anglers who took part and paid their £20 entry fee which totalled £620. The remaining amount left in the kitty after substraction of £400 of final night prize money is £220. This amount will be donated to a charity of James Fairlie’s choice.
Some Stats: Taking all the heats, James average heat position was still top at 5.38th. In second place with an average heat position of 7.64 was George Whyte. 1003 fish were caught and release over the 15 weeks and the rod average for the whole competition was 3.29.

Results 2011

It was a nail biting finish to the Boat League –with only one point in it after fifteen heats, with the top nine counting. On the last night 16 anglers caught 61 fish (54 of these were returned). Top rod on the night with 12 fish was Mark Steven – fishing heather fly type dries in Gatesideand Malling. 2nd was Brian MacKenzie with 10 and 3rd James Fairlie with 6 fish.  Traffic signal engineer Brian MacKenzie from Clydebank was the winner of this year’s League with 24points, one point less than a very close 2nd, James Fairlie of Houston, Renfrewshire. Ken Oliver was third with 33 points.

Left: Left to right; Winner Brian MacKenzie, sponsor Martin Grantham and 2nd placed James Fairlie.

Left; James Fairlie – Boat Leaguer with most different boat partners holds the Alan Ronald Memorial Trophy.

Brian MacKenzie won £150 and the trophy and chose to donate the kitty money to Motor Neurone Disease Scotland (£250 and Port of Menteith Primary School £70). (The accounts; £620 received, £300 prize money leaves £320 for charity. Lake Fisheries paid for the final night’s food and drink and provided free fishing for contestants on the last night.) The other award on the night was for the most sociable league member (i.e. the angler with most different boat partners over the course of the summer). This was apparently a “no brainer” with Jim Twaddle taking the trophy. Luckily Jim couldn’t make the final night as, in the clear light of day it was found that we did indeed have no brains and that James Fairlie was the most sociable angler with 10 different boat partners as apposed to Jim’s 7. Well done James – and hard lines Jim. For his efforts James was awarded a Vision Rod GT 44 rod from the Angling Centre Stirling which retails at £250 (but can be exchanged for something else – contact Martin). Over the course of the 2011 League heats, Martin Grantham of ACS gave out over £750 pounds worth of fly lines (15 different winners) bringing his total sponsorship of the league to over £1000. Brian’s secret to winning the league - CDC’s and hoppers.
